What Everyone is Wearing on the Trails This Year

When it comes to mountain biking apparel, here’s what every newbie cyclist needs to know. Specialized clothing is not absolutely necessary to get started in the sport. However, good mountain biking apparel increases performance and enhances comfort. It can also play a big role in protecting the rider (that’s you) from the weather and temperature extremes.  Let’s go over the basics of mountain biking apparel.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on clothing to ride a mountain bike. For that matter it’s technically possible to ride a mountain bike wearing basic athletic or leisure clothing. But just because something is possible doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. You may do just fine in running shorts, a t-shirt and some tennis shoes…for a while. However, if you continue in the sport of mountain biking or if you want to step things up a notch, you’ll eventually need to spring for some new clothes.

Apparel designed specifically for mountain biking does at least three things: it increases performance, it makes riding more comfortable and it protects you from minor injuries and muscle strain. That’s a pretty tall order for clothing, but it is true. Take gloves, for example. They increase handling by making your grip on the handlebars surer. The palm padding decreases fatigue, it improves circulation and it protects your hands in the case of a minor fall. Gloves wick moisture away from skin making your hands cooler and more comfortable.

Mountain biking shorts protect your rear end from numbness and sores. They also have a big part in keeping you dry and comfortable. Socks keep your feet from being soaked in perspiration, plus they can protect your ankles from scratches and scrapes caused by branches and foliage.

Overall, good mountain biking apparel protects from the surrounding environment, keeping you warmer on cold days and cooler in the heat. Let’s face it, you wouldn’t go running in your dress shoes or hiking in a business suit. Gear up with the right clothes for mountain biking. You’ll be surprised at the difference it makes.
